Free Pattern: Knitted Hearts

February is the month of love, and we because of this, we are absolutely enamored with spreading the love to all the squares, bars, and corners on the planet. Couples, this is a great way to demonstrate your love with small details.

Today we bring you a new free pattern to knit beautiful hearts. They are super easy and simple to make – so before you know it, you’ll already have your first gift made; and you can use them to decorate in tons of locations throughout your house. :)

And of course, they are made by hand with all the care and love in the world.  And you know it will make their heart melt. ?

KNIT HEART

MATERIALS

US size 11 beechwood knitting needles
Petite Wool in red (How about trying fuchsia or wine?)
– Tapestry needle to finish and seam

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cast on 2 stitches onto one of the wooden needles, leaving a long tail at the end, we’ll use it later to finish our heart.

Row 1: Knit the first stitch in front and back, this makes an increase. Next knit all stitches (in the first row you won’t have any stitches to work because we only started with 2, but you will when the next row repeats) until the last stitch. Knit the last stitch in front and back, to make another increase.

Row 2: purl all stitches

Now repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have a total of 14 stitches on your needle, this means that on right side rows we increase 1 stitch at the beginning and 1 stitch at the end of the row (2 increases total on each right side row).

Next row: knit 2 stitches together, knit 5, turn your work, leaving the remaining stitches unworked.

Next row: purl 2 stitches together, purl 2, purl 2 stitches together. Turn your work.

Bind off 4 stitches (from the rows just worked).

Cut the yarn that comes from the ball of yarn leaving a tail long enough to work about 2 more rows, approximately 3 feet.

Thread the tapestry needle and pass it through your work until you reach the unworked stitches we left on hold, bring your needle out so the yarn is ready to continue knitting on the right side of the heart.

Next row: knit 5 stitches, knit 2 together

Next row: purl 2 stitches together, purl 2 stitches, purl 2 stitches together.

Bind off 4 stitches. You’re finished with your first heart!

At this point you have several options to continue. Here we have chosen to make a second heart and to sew them together to make a little 3-D heart.

But with only one you can make appliqués to decorate your sweaters, use them as elbow patches….whatever you decide!

You can even sew it to construction paper to make a card for your sweetheart 😀

To make a 3-D heart with more volume, all you need to do is repeat the instructions shown in the pattern to have two equal halves of the heart.

Place both hearts together, right sides facing, and using your tapestry needle sew them together, leaving a space to turn it right side out.

Stuff your heart with cushion filling or scraps of yarn (no better way to use up trimmed yarn) and sew the opening to finish. Isn’t it cute?

Make lots of hearts and share them with the world! Give them to that special someone, friends, family….long live love!

Knitted Heart Keychain

To make the keychain heart, thread the little sewer’s needle with a strand of yarn – we have used Petite Wool in Natural, and pass the needle through the heart, as shown in the image below.

Next we make a pair of knots to support the weight of the heart.

We can finish with a braid to make it more stable.

And now we already have a cute keychain, so next you can make a copy of your house key…. and then the house can begin to y’all’s home. ?  Just an idea…

Knitted Heart Brooch

Another gift that we propose you to make is a beautiful heart brooch. For this option, all you need is a safety pin, passed through the heart as shown. And then you’re done!

And now you have our brooch heart ?

Knitted Heart Garland

This is, without a doubt, our favorite option. Because although it is a adorable gift – perfect for decorating and filling all the corners of your house with love.

Knit a few hearts, and then with the help of the little sewing needle to introduce the thread to connect the hears until they form a beautiful garland.
