Whelk stitch combines knitting and purling. It’s a very easy technique, great for beginners. And the result is so beautiful and attractive.
This stitch is not reversible, but it doesn’t roll. We show you how to knit Whelk stitch in the following video tutorial.
Cast on a number of stitches multiple of 4 + 3 stitches.
Row 1: knit 3 stitches, *slip a stitch like if you pretend to purl, knit 3 stitches*. Repeat the steps * to * until the end of the row.
Row 2: knit 3 stitches, *place the thread over the needles, slip a stitch like if you pretend to purl, place the thread below the needles, knit 3 stitches*. Repeat the steps * to * until the end of the row.
Row 3: knit 1 stitch, *slip a stitch like if you pretend to purl, knit 3 stitches*. Repeat these steps until you have 2 stitches left onto your needle. Then, a stitch like if you pretend to purl, knit 1 stitch.
Row 4: purl 1 stitch, slip a stitch like if you pretend to purl, *purl 3 stitches, slip a stitch like if you pretend to purl*. Repeat these steps until you only have 1 stitch left onto the needle, purl this stitch.
Repeat these 4 rows and you will create the motif for this technique.
For this post, we have used 15mm knitting needles and a 100% Peruvian wool yarn ball in bubblegum.
