If you’ve never added a crochet border to one of your projects, today just might be the day. A border adds personality to a project, and gives them that professional touch that we like so much. But choosing the right border can be a challenge. We have to decide on the color, the stitch pattern… so that it complements your project without taking away from it.

Today we are going to show you four crochet borders so that you can choose the one you like best, make sure you also take a look at the Blanket Stitch, another crochet border to add to your repertoire.

CRAB STITCH BORDER

Easiest, but no less beautiful than the others, this border always looks good and is very easy to do. It can be worked over any number of stitches.

Work one complete round of single crochet, but when you get to the end do not turn your work. Instead, skip the stitch that is directly on the right, and continue doing single crochet in that direction. In other words, we will work a single crochet into each stitch, as usual, but working to the right instead of to the left. When you get to the end of the round, make a single crochet into the initial chain of the round below. And you’re done!

PICOT BORDER

A discreet, yet decorative border that adds a delicate touch to your projects.

The best thing about this border is that you can adapt it to your taste by varying the separation between each picot (leaving more stitches between them) or by making the picots longer or shorter (adding more or less chains).

First crochet a round of single crochet.

In the next round work one single crochet, then chain 3. Work one slip stitch into the first chain. Work one single crochet as usual. Repeat the instructions in this paragraph around the entire border, working one single crochet with 3 chains to form the picot with one single crochet.

SHELL BORDER

A very feminine border that’s perfect for blankets or the hem of a sweater.

Just as for the previous border, this one looks better if you first work a round in a contrasting color. You will need a multiple of 4 stitches + 1 to make this border.

After the round in single crochet: chain one, work one single crochet into the next stitch. *Skip the next stitch, work 5 double crochets into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, work 1 single crochet into the next stitch*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the round, finishing with a single crochet into the last stitch.

BLOCK BORDER

Everyone who sees your project will admire this eye-catching border made of groups of double crochets.

First work a round of single crochet in a contrasting color. To make this border you will need a multiple of 4 stitches + 3.
Chain 3, skip the first 3 stitches, * work a double crochet into the next stitch, chain 3, work 3 double crochets around the 3 chains, skip the next 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until there are 3 stitches left, chain 3, and one slip stitch  into the last stitch of the previous round.
